Tidewater, the old rail line through town
The Tidewater Bikeway runs through Manteca on the bed of the old Tidewater Southern rail line, which Union Pacific and the city turned into a path more than twenty years ago. The city lists it from Lathrop Road to Moffat Boulevard, about 3.7 miles by Union Pacific's count, and walkers and cyclists use it every day. Through downtown it runs beside the active Union Pacific tracks, so safety fencing keeps the two apart and crossings are limited to the safer points: plan the dog walk around the marked crossings.

Caswell, where the leash means the picnic area
Caswell Memorial State Park, at 28000 South Austin Road off the Austin Road exit of Highway 99, keeps 258 acres of one of California's last riparian oak woodlands along the Stanislaus River, with old valley oaks shading the campsites and the endangered riparian brush rabbit in the brush. Day use runs from 8 a.m. to sunset, $10 a car. Dogs are welcome on a leash, but not on the trails, in the river or on the beaches, so a Caswell day with the dog is a shady picnic rather than a swim. Parts of the park are closed for now after flood damage, so check before you drive down.

The shelter on Wetmore Street
Manteca Animal Services works out of the shelter at 115 East Wetmore Street, phone 209-456-8270. Its officers pick up strays, take injured ones to an emergency vet and answer bite and barking complaints, and the shelter is also where you buy or renew a dog license. If your dog slips out and ends up there, bring proof of a rabies vaccination from the past twelve months: no dog goes home without it. A current license tag on the collar is the fastest way back.

We have two dogs and a cat. Can you groom them all in one Manteca visit?
Yes. The groomer takes them back to back in the same visit, one pet in the van at a time, so nobody shares the tub and nobody waits in a crate. Plan on about 120 minutes per pet, or about 180 for a large dog, and add each pet when you book so you get one quote per pet. You only hand them over and collect them; the rest of the afternoon is yours.
Our dog lives in the backyard all summer. How often should we book a groom?
Every four to six weeks for most backyard dogs, with a bath-only visit in between when the lawn turns to dust or mud. Each groom starts with a long warm-water rinse that loosens grass, grit and dried dirt before any shampoo goes on, then a full blow-out and brush-out so the undercoat cannot mat. Your groomer checks ears and paws for grass seed at every visit and tells you if the schedule should change.
Do you groom cats in Manteca?
