What you stop doing

Bath Day, Minus Everything You Hate About It

Sacramento is two cities for a grooming van. On the grid, in Midtown, Downtown and the older blocks of East Sacramento, homes sit close to the street with an alley out back and often a permit sign out front, so we ask where your own car goes and plan the stop around it. Everywhere else, in Land Park, the Pocket, Natomas, Tahoe Park and Rosemont, there is a driveway, and the van simply pulls into it. Either way the groom happens a few steps from your door. The van carries its own warm water, so the bath starts warm on a foggy January morning and feels like relief on a hundred-degree afternoon in July, and your dog is dry before the door opens. Nobody rides across town on J Street, nobody waits in a lobby, and the whole visit is done in about two hours.

No stop-and-go on the Capital City Freeway or Highway 99.

The four steps

Notes
  1. Step 1

    Book in Two Minutes

Pick a day, pick a time, tell us about your dog. Done. We confirm the day before.

  2. Step 2

    We Come to Your Door

Your groomer texts when they are on the way, then the van pulls up to your curb with its own warm water and power. No drive, no cages, no waiting room.

  3. Step 3

Your Dog Gets the Whole Van

One groomer, one dog, start to finish. No other dogs, no crate, no rushing. You get on with your day.

About 120 min · about 180 for large dogs
  4. Step 4

Back in Your Arms, Fresh and Dry

Clean coat, trimmed nails, clean ears, fully dry, and a tail that will not stop wagging. Both handoffs together take about five minutes.

In our example salon morning, about 2 h 30 min goes to driving, traffic and the counter. With Wow My Dog, the groom happens at your curb while you get on with your day: about 5 min of handoffs, so about 2 h 30 min back.

Amazing experience today with Rene! I was a bit anxious since it was the first grooming appointment for my 9-month-old Golden Retriever. She was indeed a little afraid, but Rene took exceptionally good care of her, taking the time to comfort her. She came back perfectly groomed, looking happy and with a big smile! I highly recommend !

Wow! My dog is an amazing service. They come to you with a groomer that is skilled and kind. My dog, Ms. Lady, loves them so much that when she sees their familiar grooming van she becomes so excited. The quality of the final grooming is excellent, I feel like a dad wanting to share my kid’s wallet pics. I highly recommend!

Love this grooming company. my dog always looks exactly like I wanted her to look. they always get it right and my pepper gladly goes with them. don't like to go to grooming facilities. it costs more and it's very noisy. this way there is little or no stree on my dog and me for that matter

Fernanda was absolutely wonderful with Loki. He is quite a scared and vocal dog, but she was so gentle and patient with him. She arrived right on time and maintained such a kind, positive energy. I was so impressed that I’ve already booked our next appointment with her!

Dog Life in Sacramento

Real parks, real trails, and what they do to a coat. Notes from the groomer's side of the van.

William Land Park, Sacramento
William Land Park

Snapshot 01 · Parks

Fifteen fenced dog parks, double gates on every one

The City of Sacramento runs fifteen off-leash dog parks, all fenced with a double-gate entry, and most with shade, benches and a dog drinking fountain. Truitt Bark Park at 18th and Q is the Midtown one, with separate areas for large and small dogs; Sutter's Landing on 28th Street gives both sizes two and a half acres by the river; Partner Park sits behind the Belle Cooledge center in South Land Park; and North Natomas Regional Park and Regency Park cover the north side. The rules are short: off leash only inside the fence, a current license on the collar, one adult for every two dogs. The city is also weighing a new dog park inside William Land Park, its 207-acre showpiece on Land Park Drive. A week of dog-park dust is what usually puts a bath on the calendar.

Snapshot 02 · Trails

The American River Parkway, six feet of leash

The Parkway is the big walk in this city, and it belongs to Sacramento County, so county rules apply: outside a designated off-leash area, dogs stay leashed everywhere in a county park, and the leash, retractable or not, is six feet or shorter under County Code 9.36.061. The county keeps Mutt Mitt stations along the river at Paradise Beach, Arden Way, Kadema Drive and Sunrise, and it warns about what a loose dog finds in the brush: rattlesnakes, ticks, poison oak and burrs. Those burrs and the river's fine sand are what the groomer combs out of feathering and between toes after a Parkway week.

Permit blocks on the grid, driveways everywhere else

Sacramento's Residential Permit Parking program, City Code chapter 10.48, puts lettered permit blocks on residential streets, and the city's interactive map shows which ones. A permit block has a sign with one large letter above the word permit, and it works in our favor: any vehicle may park there without a permit as long as it stays inside the posted time limit or pays the meter, except on blocks signed No Parking Any Time Except With Permit. A groom runs about two hours, so most posted limits fit, and if your block is the strict kind we use your alley apron or a guest space instead. Permits are free for residents, and no vehicle, permit or not, may sit in one street space longer than 72 hours. Tell us which kind of block you live on when you book and the groomer arrives with the spot settled.

Sacramento residential permit parking

Groomer's note, coat care around Sacramento: Sacramento coats live between two rivers and a very hot summer. Parkway sand and burrs work into feathering, tule fog leaves a long coat damp for days in winter, and from June on a thick undercoat holds heat a dog cannot shed on its own. Every visit includes a warm-water bath and a full blow-out to lift the grit and the dead undercoat, plus a comb-through of ears, legs and tail. Heavy shedders do best on a steady spring and summer schedule here, and doodle-type coats stay on a regular trim so the fog never meets a mat.

Pre-groom checklist · Sacramento
Which Sacramento neighborhoods do you come to?

All of them inside the city, plus West Sacramento across the river. That means the grid of Downtown and Midtown, East Sacramento, Land Park, Curtis Park and Oak Park, the Pocket and Greenhaven along the levee, Natomas and North Sacramento, Arden-Arcade, Tahoe Park, Fruitridge, Meadowview and Rosemont. Elk Grove, Roseville, Folsom, Citrus Heights, Carmichael and Rancho Cordova are on our Sacramento-area routes too, so a border street is never a problem. Share your full address when you book and we confirm it.

My Midtown block is permit parking. Can the van still groom at my house?

Yes. On most permit blocks any vehicle may park inside the posted time limit without a permit, and a groom takes about 120 minutes, so the van fits the limit. If your block is signed No Parking Any Time Except With Permit, we use your alley apron, your garage apron or a guest space instead; tell us which when you book and the spot is settled before the day. The van carries its own warm water and power, so it needs nothing from the house, and travel is included in the groom price for every Sacramento address.

Sacramento summers are brutal. How often should a double-coated dog be groomed?

Every four to six weeks from late spring through early fall, with a bath and de-shed in between if the undercoat packs down fast. A Husky, Shepherd or Golden sheds its winter layer right as the valley heats up, and dead undercoat trapped against the skin holds heat instead of letting it out. Your groomer bathes in warm water, blows the loose coat out completely and never shaves a double coat, which would take away the dog's own sun protection. In winter the schedule can stretch, as long as the fog-damp coat gets fully dry each time.

Do you groom cats in Sacramento?

Yes, at every Sacramento address, Midtown flats and Natomas apartments included. Cat grooming happens in the same quiet, self-contained van, one-on-one with no dogs around: a Cat Bath is a flat $140 and a Cat Bath + Haircut a flat $180, flat. Carry your cat out in a carrier, the groomer takes it from there, and a long-haired cat that mats in the summer heat does especially well on a regular schedule.
